LAST SEMESTER, THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCED ACADEMICS AT PLANO ISD REACHED OUT TO OUR SCHOOL. WE HAD 20 TEACHERS COME FROM ONE OF THEIR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND AT THE MOMENT THEY ARE LOOKING AT BRINGING IB INTO THEIR SCHOOL. SO THEY ARE WANTING TO KNOW WHAT THOSE THE DIFFERENT SUBJECT GROUPS LOOKED LIKE IN MAINLY A MIDDLE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT. SO THOSE TEACHERS, WE DIVIDED THEM UP INTO THREE GROUPS. WE HAD TEACHERS FROM OUR SCHOOL REPRESENTING AND WERE THE HOST TO THEM TO TAKE THEM AROUND A VARIETY OF CLASSROOMS FOR GRADES SIX, SEVEN AND EIGHT SO THEY COULD SEE THE DIFFERENT SUBJECT GROUPS IN OPERATION. THE CLASSES WERE ALL HANDS ON WORKING DURING INVESTIGATING, GOING THROUGH THE INQUIRY PROCESS, AND OUR TEACHERS WERE VERY HAPPY FOR THE VISITING TEACHERS TO GO IN AND TALK TO TEACHERS, TALK TO OUR STUDENTS WHILE THEY WERE WORKING. AS PART OF MY ROLE IN THE IB EDUCATOR NETWORK COMMUNITY, I HAVE BEEN A WORKSHOP LEADER, AN EXAMINER, AND ALSO A CONSULTANT FOR SCHOOLS WHO NEED SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THOSE ROLES IS HOW IT STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY AND STRENGTHENS MY ABILITY TO SEE SCHOOLS AROUND HERE, BUT ALSO GLOBALLY. WITHOUT MY EXPERIENCE AS AN IB MEMBER, I WOULDN'T HAVE SUCH A PASSION FOR MY ROLE THAT I DO NOW. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF ALL PROGRAM STANDARDS AND PRACTICES, IB REQUIREMENTS, DOCUMENTATION, CURRICULUM UPDATES AND SO MY KNOWLEDGE AND MY INSIGHT ALWAYS GIVES WESTLAKE ACADEMY THE ADVANTAGE. OUR STUDENTS WERE EXCELLENT AT BEING ABLE TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH THEM AND EXPLAIN WHAT THE LEARNING WAS GOING ON IN THEIR CLASSROOM, AND IN SOME CASES, THERE WERE SUMMATIVE PROJECTS THAT WERE BEING PRESENTED. SO THE TEACHERS THAT WERE IN THE ROOM THAT WEREN'T SCIENTISTS WERE ACTUALLY LEARNING ABOUT THE SCIENCE GOING ON IN GRADE EIGHT. IT WAS WONDERFUL TO WATCH. WE GATHERED SOME OF OUR TEACHERS WHO WERE AVAILABLE DURING THEIR CONFERENCE PERIOD TO HOST A Q&A SESSION. SO THOSE TEACHERS SO SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS THEY HAD ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE CLASSROOM, HOW WE GOT OUR STUDENTS TO BE AT THAT LEVEL IN A CERTAIN CLASSROOM. THEY COULD ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS FOR THEM AND GIVE THEM SOME OF THAT. THE NITTY GRITTY OF WHAT IT'S LIKE TO TEACH IN AN IB ENVIRONMENT. AMONGST OUR STAFF, WE HAVE REPRESENTATIVES WHO ARE IB EXAMINERS, WORKSHOP LEADERS AND SITE VISITORS. WE LOVE HOW OUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL IB COMMUNITY PROMOTE WESTLAKE ACADEMY AND IT HELPS US ALWAYS RISE TO THE CHALLENGE OF BEING THE BEST IB SCHOOL. IT ALLOWS ME TO CREATE CONNECTIONS AND BRING CONNECTIONS TO WESTLAKE ACADEMY FROM SCHOOLS ALL OVER THE WORLD. SO WHETHER IT'S TALKING WITH ADMINISTRATION, PARTNERING WITH CLASSES, INDIVIDUAL CLASSES, OR EVEN BRINGING STUDENTS TO AND FROM DIFFERENT SCHOOLS GLOBALLY, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT BRINGING TO US, LIKE ACADEMY, BUT ALSO JUST BRINGING THOSE EXPERIENCES HERE TO HELP STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS HAS BEEN OUR OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK TO THE IB COMMUNITY HERE. THE OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO PARTNER WITH OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR TEACHERS TO REFLECT ON THEIR PRACTICE AND GROW WITH OTHER TEACHERS IN THE AREA SO THAT MORE PEOPLE GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND AN IB EDUCATION. WHEN I FIRST JOINED THE WESTLAKE ACADEMY TEAM, ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING THINGS TO ME WAS TO FIND OUT THAT WE ALREADY HAD MEMBERS OF OUR STAFF WHO WERE PART OF THE IBEN COMMUNITY, AND THEY WERE OUT WITH IB DOING WORKSHOPS AND GRADING EXAMS AND DOING SITE VISITS AND DOING ALL THE THINGS THAT WE KNOW PUT US IN THE CONVERSATION FOR IMPROVEMENT WITHIN IB. FOR THE EXPANSION OF IB AND FOR REACHING MORE FAMILIES WITH IB. AND SO TO HAVE THAT ALREADY IN PLACE GAVE US A REALLY STRONG FOUNDATION TO CONTINUE TO BUILD ON, SO THAT WE ARE IN THOSE GLOBAL CONVERSATIONS AND MAKING THOSE GLOBAL CONNECTIONS, AS WELL AS BEING UNIQUELY POISED IN THE NORTH TEXAS AREA WHERE WE KNOW SO MUCH GROWTH IS OCCURRING, TO PUT US REALLY AT THE FOREFRONT OF BEING LEADERS IN THE IB WORLD AND HAVING WESTLAKE ACADEMY SET UP TO BE A MODEL SCHOOL FOR ANYONE TO COME AND SEE WHAT GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING. SO OUR REPRESENTATIVE, GIOVANNI LEONE, SENATOR KELLY HANCOCK WE SPENT HOUR AND A HALF OR SO WITH EACH OF THEM AND TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS SESSION WAS GOING TO GET, AND I'M WATCHING IT ALMOST EVERY DAY. AND THEN I HAD AND I KNOW MIKE BERRY FROM HILLWOOD QUITE A BIT. I GOT TO HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL MEETING WITH PETE GEREN. IF YOU REMEMBER, MR. GEREN, HE WAS A FOUR TIME CONGRESSMAN FROM FORT WORTH. HE'S HEAVILY INVOLVED IN CHARTER SCHOOLS. I THINK AFTER OUR MEETINGS WITH THE WITH GIOVANNI AND KELLY. KELLY RICH AND I WROTE LETTERS THEN I KNOW WE SENT OUT. I THINK EVERYBODY WADE, I KNOW YOU SENT LETTERS TO ALL THE REPRESENTATIVES AND HERE'S THE HERE'S THE ISSUE THAT I WANT OUR RESIDENTS TO UNDERSTAND. I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO CONTINUE TO DO A BETTER JOB AROUND THIS. AND THEN I'M GOING TO GET PROBABLY EXCITED WHEN I THINK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE ISSUES WE'RE HAVING WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS AROUND THE STATE. SO JUST THE HIGH LEVEL MATH. OUR SCHOOL HAS ABOUT $11 MILLION BUDGET. OKAY. ROUGHLY $8 MILLION OF THAT IS THE PER STUDENT ALLOCATION FROM THE TEA AND I'M GOING TO GET TO THAT. AND THEN THE OTHER 3 MILLION, FOR THE SAKE OF THIS CONVERSATION, IS BETWEEN THE TOWN CONTRIBUTION, OUR RESIDENTS AND BETWEEN WHAT THE FOUNDATION RAISES. RIGHT. AND RIGHT? AND THAT'S REALLY NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO DO ALL THE THINGS WE WANT TO DO. BUT WHAT WE FOUND OUT AND I'M GOING TO REALLY THANK MICHELLE BRIGGS, WE REALLY DID A DEEP DIVE. WE'RE GETTING AROUND FOR THIS CONVERSATION. LET'S SAY $8,700 A KID, $8,800 A KID. AND WHEN WE REALLY WENT AND LOOKED AT THAT, WE FOUND THAT ISDS GET A MUCH HIGHER NUMBER. ISDS GET LIKE 12,400. AND THEN WHAT WAS REALLY DISTURBING IS THE AVERAGE CHARTER SCHOOL. THE AVERAGE CHARTER SCHOOL GETS 11 ONE. THAT'S 2000, THAT'S A COUPLE MILLION DOLLARS TO US. SO THEN WE NEED TO GET THAT OUT THE WORK YOU DID MICHELLE. WE BROKE DOWN THE WAY THIS MATH IS DONE IS SO COMPLICATED BECAUSE IT HAS ALL THE REASONS. THE BASE IS LIKE 6160, I THINK. AND THEN IT GOES UP AND IT DOES IT FOR GRADUATION RATES. AND THERE'S PROBABLY 30 DIFFERENT CRITERIA. SPECIAL ED. AND THE OTHER THING IS, IF YOU KEEP UP WITH THIS, THE SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS HAVE NOT HAD A RAISE SINCE 2019. THANK GOD WE'VE HAD NO INFLATION SINCE 2019. THAT'S RIDICULOUS. SO EVERYONE WE MET WITH GIO, KELLY AND MR. GERIN, THEY SAID, AND I'M GOING TO ASK COUNCIL FOR FUTURE [00:55:02] CONSIDERATION. WE NEED TO JUMP ON THE TEXAS CHARTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION, AND WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH A BIGGER VOICE, BECAUSE WHAT WE DID HERE, WHICH I DIDN'T PARTICULARLY LIKE HEARING, IS LIKE, YOU'RE A SMALL SCHOOL IN AN AFFLUENT AREA. NOBODY CARES. I CARE, AND I THINK OUR RESIDENTS CARE. AND I THINK IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, WE CAN DO BETTER WITH EDUCATION. IF YOU KEEP UP, YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH HOUSTON ISD. IT IS A TRAIN WRECK. AND THEN JUST NEXT DOOR, FORT WORTH ISD. THEY SAY 50% OF THEIR CHILDREN ARE NOT READING AT LEVEL. YEAH, THAT'S BEING NICE. IT'S 58% OF FOURTH GRADERS AND IT'S 52% OF EIGHTH GRADERS. AND IF I'M A IF I'M IN AUSTIN AS A POLITICIAN WITH MY BUSINESS BACKGROUND, I GO, I DON'T KNOW THAT I WANT TO THROW MORE MONEY AT THAT. RIGHT. AND MAYBE KEEP GETTING THE SAME RESULTS. SO I THINK WE'RE AT A TURNING POINT. I'M AN OLD GUY, BUT THIS IS A SOCIETAL PROBLEM IF WE DON'T GET THIS FIXED. EDUCATING OUR KIDS. AND I THINK FOR EACH ONE OF THESE, I SAID, I'M GOING TO TAKE OFF MY MAYOR'S HAT FOR A MINUTE. MY PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, WHAT ABOUT MERITOCRACY? WHAT ABOUT TAKING CARE OF THE SCHOOLS THAT DO A REALLY GOOD JOB, LIKE A SCHOOL THAT IS AN IB SCHOOL THAT'S HAD 100% GRADUATION RATE FOR TEN YEARS AND HAS GREAT TEA TEST SCORES ACROSS THE BOARD. WE'RE SENDING OUR KIDS FROM IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS ON DOWN, BUT NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR THAT EITHER. SO WE ARE NOT LETTING UP ON THIS. WE ARE HEADED TO AND I DON'T THINK THIS COUNCIL'S I DON'T KNOW IF WE'VE EVER DONE IT. WE ARE GOING TO GET INVOLVED. WE'RE HEADING DOWN MONDAY TO AUSTIN TO MEET WITH OUR LEGISLATORS ON TUESDAY. EVERYBODY'S WELCOME, BUT WE ARE GOING TO GET HEAVILY INVOLVED IN THIS. WHEN I SAY WE HAVE A WONDERFUL SCHOOL, YOU KNOW, I KNOW YOU'RE PROBABLY SICK OF HEARING ABOUT THIS. SOME OF OUR RESIDENTS, WE ARE THE NUMBER ONE PUBLIC CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. WE'RE THE NUMBER FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WE'RE THE NUMBER 17TH RANKED HIGH SCHOOL OVERALL. THERE'S OVER 900 CHARTER SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, SERVING 375,000 OF OUR CHILDREN AND 56,000 CHILDREN ON THE WAIT LIST TO GET INTO CHARTER SCHOOLS. THE PROBLEM? THERE'S 5.1 MILLION CHILDREN IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM WHICH NEEDS WORK. SO I JUST WANTED TO GIVE HER THAT UPDATE. I APPRECIATE I APPRECIATE ALL OF OUR REPRESENTATIVES SPENDING TIME WITH US. WE'RE LOOKING FOR A BILL. I'VE GOTTEN SOME FEEDBACK EARLY ON THAT THEY ARE LOOKING TO CHANGE THE BASIC ALLOCATION. AND FOR US, IF THEY CHANGE THAT ONE PROPOSAL, $700 A CHILD, THAT'S A BIG DEAL FOR US. THAT'S A BIG DEAL FOR OUR SCHOOL. THE OTHER PART OF THIS AND MICHELLE, HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING. YOU GUYS CHIME IN. WE ARE CAPPED FROM OUR FACILITIES FUNDING. THERE'S A $60 MILLION FOR ALL CHARTER SCHOOLS, AND THERE'S TALK ABOUT THEM REMOVING THAT CAP, AND THAT WOULD HELP US TO IF WE COULD JUST GET TO THE AVERAGE CHARTER SCHOOL, WE WOULD BE IN GREAT SHAPE. BUT THERE'S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE THERE. KELLY, MICHELLE, ANYTHING I MISSED OR? I CAN SEND OUT THE WORKSHOP, THE WORKSHEET THAT KIM'S REFERENCING. I WISH YOU WOULD. IT'S REALLY GOOD. FUNDING WOULD BE US GETTING MOVING FROM GETTING ABOUT $100 FOR FACILITIES A KID AND THE ISD'S ARE GETTING ABOUT, I THINK IT'S LIKE 1000 A KID FOR FACILITIES. AND SO JUST MOVING THE CAP WOULD GET US TO ABOUT $900 A KID. WHICH IS MASSIVE, BUT THEY ALREADY HAVE THE EQUATION. THEY JUST PUT A CAP, YOU KNOW, OF LESSER THAN OR EQUAL TO 60 MILLION. AND THAT 60 MILLION IS BEING SHARED WITH 900 CHARTER SCHOOLS. AND SO OBVIOUSLY WE'RE GETTING ONLY ABOUT 100 $100 A STUDENT. AND SO HOPEFULLY THAT SHIFTS. I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT THE TEXAS CHARTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION IS REALLY PUSHING AND SO WE'RE HOPING THAT THAT THAT MOVES FORWARD AND THAT WOULD BE HUGE. ALSO, THE BASIC ALLOTMENT WOULD GET US EVEN FURTHER WHERE WE NEED TO BE. SO THE OTHER WAY TO LOOK AT THAT, WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT A $60 MILLION CAP FOR 900 SOMETHING SCHOOLS. WATCH WHAT BOND PROPOSALS GO UP AROUND US. I MEAN, MOST BOND PROPOSALS ARE MORE THAN 60 MILLION FOR ONE DISTRICT. SO IT'S REALLY IF YOU'RE IN THE POSITION TO TALK TO PEOPLE, JUST THE LOGIC OF THAT. THERE'S NO WAY TO MAKE THAT RIGHT. THERE'S NO WAY TO MAKE THAT MAKE SENSE. THAT WE'RE SHARING THAT LITTLE MONEY WITH THAT MANY OTHER SCHOOLS. LISTEN, THIS LISTEN, THERE'S A CONTEST BETWEEN CHARTER SCHOOLS AND ISDS, AND CHARTER SCHOOLS HAVE ONLY BEEN AROUND THE STATE SINCE, I THINK 1995. AT THE END OF THE DAY, IF YOU KEEP OUR CHILDREN IN MIND, I DON'T CARE WHERE THEY GET EDUCATED, WHO CAN DO IT BEST AND WHO CAN DO IT BEST FOR OUR CHILDREN, AND WE GOT TO GET BEYOND THAT. I HAD A I HAD A OFFICIAL TELL ME AND THINK ABOUT THIS. THEY TOLD ME IN SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS, WE HAVE MORE KIDS GOING TO PRISON THAN WE DO COLLEGE. AND THE FACT THAT THEY DIDN'T FOLLOW UP WITH AND WE'RE DOING THIS. IT'S TERRIBLE. SO I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH AND ALL OF OUR BOARD FOR THE SCHOOL WE HAVE IN OUR 21ST YEAR, BUT WE ARE GOING TO GIVE THIS THING HELL TO TRY TO GET APPROPRIATE, CONTINUE APPROPRIATE FINANCING FOR US. SO NOW THAT YOU'RE HEAD OF SCHOOL, I'M SEEING A LOT MORE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH THE STATE AND WITH OTHER RESOURCES AND REALLY BROADENING THE POTENTIAL NET THAT WE HAVE TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL. AND I THINK THAT'S JUST HUGELY IMPORTANT. WELL, THANK YOU, ANNA. I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.
